Why local history matters
Elgin was founded in 1835 by James Talcott Gifford, a settler from New York who named the young settlement after a Scottish hymn tune. A dam raised on the Fox River in 1838 gave the town waterpower, and after a rail link reached Elgin in 1850 the city grew into a major dairy-producing center; the town incorporated in 1846 and became a city in 1854. Its best-known industry arrived in 1864, when the Elgin National Watch Company was chartered with $100,000 in capital and built a factory complex that stood, for nearly a century, as the largest site in the world dedicated to watchmaking.
