A Township Older Than Its Village
Hampshire Township was organized in 1845, nearly three decades before the village itself existed: 'Hampshire Center' was platted in October 1874 by A.J. Willing and C.A. Fasseth, then relocated in 1876 to sit along the Chicago-Pacific Railroad line, where it incorporated that October by a 73-2 vote with Samuel Rowell as first village president. By 1893 the farming community around it had grown into the second-largest milk producing and shipping station in Illinois.
Milk Country Construction and What Sits Beneath It
A township organized in 1845 but a village center that didn't settle into its permanent rail-line location until 1876 means Hampshire's foundations span two distinct building periods: scattered township-era farmhouses and a more concentrated village core built up around the 1874-1893 milk-shipping boom. Both sit on Kane County's glacial till, where the clay fraction shrinks and swells with the seasons regardless of which decade the foundation above it was poured or laid.
