The Town of Tomorrow
Streamwood was farm country -- known as Hoosier Grove -- from the 1830s through the 1950s, and as late as 1950 the future Streamwood area of Hanover Township had only about 800 residents spread across those farms. That changed in 1956, when Maxon Construction and L H Builders erected 21 pre-assembled houses on concrete slabs at Bartlett and Schaumburg Roads, shipped in from Indiana by the National Homes Corporation and marketed as a 'Town of Tomorrow' for returning war veterans; the village incorporated on February 9, 1957, and its population jumped from roughly 800 in 1950 to 4,821 by 1960.
Reading a 1956 Slab Foundation
Unlike the fieldstone-and-pier construction common in Kane County's older rail towns, Streamwood's founding houses were built directly on concrete slabs as part of that 1956 pre-assembled construction push, which changes what a foundation issue looks like and where it tends to show up. A slab poured over Kane County's glacial till is still subject to the same clay expansion and contraction that affects older pier foundations nearby, just distributed differently across a single continuous pour instead of concentrated at scattered piers.
